Westeel History

•  The official birthday of Westeel Limited was the year 1905. The company, founded by W. J. McMartin, began modestly in a tiny metal shop situated on the banks of the Seine River in Winnipeg , Manitoba . It was first known as “Winnipeg Ceiling and Roofing Company”

•  The growth of the west brought together a number of well known Companies, which were re-incorporated in 1926 as Western Steel Products Limited. This new innovative group designed and produced the first corrugated steel granary which began to dot the western Canadian prairies providing safe weather protected on farm storage of harvested grain products waiting to be hauled to the railroad siding and elevators.

•  By 1930, the company had formulated a vast manufacturing network system which was known by the trade name “Westeel”. It included plants at Regina , Calgary , Edmonton , Saskatoon , Vancouver , Toronto , and Montreal , as well as Sales Offices in Halifax , Quebec City, Ottawa , Brandon , Swift Current, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie .

•  In 1938, a small office was opened in Ottawa to facilitate liaison with the Government of Canada. The Department of National Defense contracted with all the nationwide facilities of Western Steel Products Limited to supply manufactured and assembled equipment to the Royal Canadian Navy, The Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Apart from a complete changeover of product lines to wartime orders, this was an era that saw women employed on the shop floors for the first time.

•  In 1945 the Company re-converted to peacetime production of their established and varied lines of steel products for use in industrial plants, road building, oil industry, agricultural construction and general construction work. A large backlog of civilian demand was built up during the war years and since the war ended, these requirements kept all plants running at close to capacity. Pent up demand for war-scarce materials brought on another surge of activity. The gasoline tractor had replaced steam and horsepower on the nation's farms and one product line in great demand at the time was on-farm fuel storage.

•  In 1945, the company name was changed to Westeel Products Limited and the various names of previously acquired companies were dropped.

•  The assets of P. Graham Bell Associates Limited were purchased in 1959. A new plant was built and equipped to house the porcelain enameled curtain wall manufacturing equipment and baking ovens for its operation. The plant was located in Georgetown , Ontario .

•  In 1960, the company acquired Columbia Metal Rolling Mills with steel roll forming equipment and a developed line of metal wall panel and steel deck products produced in Toronto , Winnipeg and Vancouver .

•  Westeel Products Limited purchased and amalgamated with Rosco Metal Products Limited and in 1965 Westeel Rosco Limited was formed. Today Westeel's Standard-Corr grain bins continue to be sold with the WESTEEL-ROSCO stenciled name identification.

•  Other acquisitions followed when in 1968 Westeel-Rosco Limited, Canada 's largest sheet metal fabricator announced that it had purchased Northland Machinery Supply Company Limited, an Ontario Corporation based at the Lakehead. Northland was engaged in the manufacture and installation of dust collection and grain cleaning equipment which added a group of complimentary products to Westeel-Rosco

•  In 1973, Westeel purchased Anthes Western Limited, the Winnipeg tank manufacturing facility of Molson Industries Ltd. This was the beginning of Westeel's leadership in the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (A.S.M.E.) pressure vessel and atmospheric tank/petroleum storage industry.

•  In 1978, Jannock Limited, a public company headquartered in Toronto , became the major shareholder and parent company of Westeel.

•  Westeel introduced it's wide-corr grain bin in 1982, bringing a new dimension to grain storage with a larger series of grain bins for major farming operations and the grain handling industry. During 1983, the company name was changed to “Westeel – a Division of Jannock”.

•  In 1983 the road construction and drainage products operations were amalgamated with Armco Canada Ltd. operating under the business name of Armtec . In 1986 the building products, farm roofing and siding operations were amalgamated with Vic Metal Inc. to form VicWest Steel Inc .

•  March 10, 2000 marked yet another era for Westeel when Jannock Limited was purchased by Magnatrax Corporation with head offices in Eufala , Alabama . Magnatrax is the Steel Products Division of Onex Corporation, Toronto , Ontario .

•  September 15, 2003 marked another change for Westeel Limited, when it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Vicwest Corporation.  Effective June 2004, Vicwest Corporation became a publicly traded company on the TSX.

•  Today, Westeel is a thriving manufacturer of Steel Storage Containers and maintains four Manufacturing Facilities in Olds , Alberta ; Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ; Regina , Saskatchewan and Winnipeg , Manitoba .
